It’s time to transition your sober lifestyle into typical everyday life. Depending on your environment, it can sometimes be difficult staying sober when put in stressful or emotional (“trigger”) situations. This is why we have put together a list of the top tips we found most helpful when transitioning from treatment back to normal life.
1. Build and Grow Your Network
After treatment, it is crucial to maintain connections and build a network to help others. Sober Living provides great opportunities to make meaningful connections with people going through similar experiences. Regular check-ins, activities, or outings can strengthen these bonds and ensure your success in staying sober with a well-established support system.
2. Get Active
Along with the physical benefits of exercise that will allow your body to recover faster, living a more active lifestyle also has psychological benefits, including stress-reduction and the ability to help curb substance cravings. Who knows, maybe a new hobby or social group can form out of exercise or sporting events?
3. Make a Plan
A plan of any sort can be a great segue into life after treatment. Set goals and plan activities to look forward to that genuinely excite you. Working toward these initiatives with the help of a Sober Living environment, family, friends, or your support network will both distract and free your mind of possible relapse while setting a healthy life schedule.
4. Celebrate Your Milestones
Continuing sobriety is no easy accomplishment, and thus merits rewards. Treat yourself to a reward when you reach a personal milestone, such as months or years of sobriety, to inspire you to move forward. Tell your friends and family about these milestones so they can continue to cheer you on.
5. Ask for Help
Many people believe that after treatment, their resources are limited and there should be no need for additional recovery programs. However, if you find yourself struggling in any capacity, you should reach out for help. Support exists far beyond rehabilitation programs, and there is no shame in reaching out for help from friends, family, professional services, Sober Living communities, or another support network.
