Today there are a variety of treatment options when someone is battling addiction and mental health issues. One of those options is enrollment in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

As the name suggests, this type of treatment program is for people who are not emitted into a hospital or rehab facility but want in-depth support from clinical experts. The patient lives at home or a Sober Living residence and goes into a treatment center 3-7 days a week to participate in the program. Due to the way the program is structured, it’s sometimes referred to as day hospitalization.

Like other forms of addiction treatment, PHP isn’t recommended for everyone. A number of factors go into determining if it’s the right option for reaching sobriety, starting with where the individual is at in their recovery process.

Where PHP Behavioral Health Services Fall on the Treatment Spectrum

PHPs are considered an alternative for 24-hour inpatient psychiatric care. Partial Hospitalization Programs can be the first course of treatment or a “step down” treatment for addiction. Our Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas, TX is a solution for those who have either just been discharged from residential inpatient treatment or are unable to attend inpatient treatment.

PHP is a more intensive type of treatment that is generally used early on in sobriety when a person needs more structure and support. Often, Sober Living is recommended in conjunction with a Partial Hospitalization Program. Upon completing a PHP, it’s usually suggested that the individual enroll in Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) as a continuation of their treatment.

The goal of PHP is to help patients become more independent as they go through treatment. While the program is highly structured, there’s far less oversight compared to inpatient treatment. Emphasis is put on giving patients individualized support based on their needs and history. Patients learn skills for maintaining sobriety and how to apply those skills so that they can build the confidence that’s needed to stay sober on their own.

What Happens in a Partial Hospitalization Program

Effective PHP behavioral health programs are very immersive and comprehensive. Most Partial Hospitalization Programs in Dallas require treatment at least three days a week and are four weeks long, but that can vary depending on medical needs, engagement during the program and insurance benefits.

During that time the patient will attend private and group therapy sessions in a structured setting. The Lighthouse Recovery Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas includes 25 hours of group therapy that’s five hours a day, five days a week. Patients also attend at least one hour-long individual therapy session and additional psychiatric support.

Ideally, the group sessions should be kept small so that each person gets personalized attention instead of getting lost in a crowd. Only eight people at most will be part of the group sessions in a Lighthouse Recovery PHP. Our team goes a step further and carefully selects members of each group so that the sessions remain productive and efficient.

If a person is already seeing a psychiatrist or enlisting the help of medical professionals, the PHP team should correspond with those healthcare providers and coordinate care. In the Lighthouse Recovery PHP each patient is also paired with a Recovery Coach that is available outside of the clinical setting. The Recovery Coach will help the patient set goals as well as providing accountability and support whenever it’s needed.

Relapsing During a Partial Hospitalization Program

It can be hard to understand at first, but relapsing is often a part of addiction recovery even when someone is getting professional treatment. If a relapse occurs during treatment the patient is encouraged to continue on with the Partial Hospitalization Program. A relapse is a setback, but it in no way means that treatment isn’t possible or that a PHP won’t work. The supportive staff can make adjustments to the Partial Hospitalization Program if needed and help get the patient back on the road to recovery as quickly as possible.
