Sports Betting Addiction: Warning Signs Families Should Know

Lighthouse Treatment Programs
Our Gambling Addiction Program will be the first specialized treatment program of its kind in Dallas, offering group therapy designed specifically for process addictions. These groups will provide clinical structure and peer support focused exclusively on gambling addiction – giving clients the tools they need to break the cycle of compulsive gambling while maintaining their daily responsibilities.
This will not be a casual support group. It will be a clinically structured program for people who are ready to address the financial, emotional, and relational damage caused by gambling addiction. The approach will be direct – we’ll focus on the specific thought patterns and behaviors that drive compulsive gambling, and we’ll help clients build the skills to manage triggers in the real world where betting is increasingly accessible.
Gambling addiction doesn’t announce itself the way substance abuse does – there’s no physical withdrawal – just destroyed credit, emptied accounts, relationships built on lies, and the exhausting mental loops. Our Gambling Addiction Program will give you a place to stop hiding and start addressing why you keep doing it. You’ll work with others who understand the specific shame and chaos of gambling addiction, and you’ll build the tools to handle the everyday triggers.
The Gambling Addiction Program is slated to launch in Spring 2026 and will be available to anyone struggling with compulsive gambling – whether you’re currently in treatment at Lighthouse for substance abuse and realizing gambling has become its own problem, or you’re seeking help specifically for gambling addiction. This will be the first program of its kind in Dallas, and it’s designed for people who are ready to stop pretending they can control it on their own. Gambling addiction is isolating in a way that’s different from substance abuse – fewer people understand it, fewer programs treat it, and the shame keeps most people silent far longer than they should be. This program will give you a place where you don’t have to explain yourself before you can start getting help.
The program will be group-based, meeting multiple times per week with others who understand the specific chaos of gambling addiction – the lies, the financial destruction, the constant mental negotiation about “just one more bet.” You’ll be expected to show up consistently, participate honestly, and work on what you’re learning between sessions. A relapse doesn’t mean you’re out, but it does mean we’ll have a direct conversation about what happened and what needs to change. The structure exists because gambling addiction responds to the same thing any addiction does: honesty, accountability, and consistent work over time.
Gambling addiction is a process addiction, which means the high comes from the behavior itself – the anticipation, the risk, the near-miss that feels like proof you’re close to winning. There’s no chemical leaving your system, but the brain patterns are just as entrenched. The work isn’t about willpower or avoiding casinos – it’s about understanding the distorted thinking that convinces you the next bet will be different, recognizing the emotional states that trigger the urge to gamble, and building the tolerance to sit with discomfort without chasing the escape that gambling provides. Most people who struggle with gambling addiction have been hiding it for years, managing the financial damage in secret, and telling themselves they can stop whenever they want to. Our approach starts with ending that isolation.
Group therapy is the foundation of our Gambling Addiction Program because gambling thrives in secrecy and dies in community. In group, you’ll work with others who understand the specific shame of gambling addiction – the destroyed credit, the lies to family, the irrational certainty that you can win it back. You’ll identify your triggers, challenge the cognitive distortions that fuel compulsive gambling, and develop practical skills for managing money, stress, and the constant access to betting that modern life provides. We use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and relapse prevention planning, but the real power is in the room – people who have lived what you’re living and are committed to doing something different. Recovery from gambling addiction isn’t about never thinking about betting again. It’s about building a life where you don’t need to.
