Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Dallas, Texas

Individualized treatment plans for mental health conditions, addiction concerns, and relapse prevention.

At Lighthouse Recovery Texas, we offer an adult partial hospitalization program (PHP) in Dallas to treat substance abuse, addiction, mental health disorders, and co-occurring disorders via an integrative and custom-designed curriculum.

Our partial hospitalization program in Dallas, TX, is best suited for individuals who require ongoing clinical care, accountability, and support to help them sustain long-term recovery but cannot commit to a 30-day inpatient program. Our staff-to-client ratio, program structure, and holistic approach allow us to work with each client on a customized basis to ensure the best possible outcome.

Our PHP treatment lasts four to five weeks, with 30 hours of programming per week and psychiatric support. Eventually, the client will step down to a lower level of care in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

GET STARTED WITH PHP

What is PHP?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured, intensive day treatment program that provides comprehensive clinical care for addiction and mental health while allowing individuals to return home or to sober living each day.

About our PHP in Dallas, TX

At Lighthouse Recovery Texas, we deliver structured, individualized care that bridges clinical treatment and real-world recovery. Here’s why you should choose our partial hospitalization program:

Recovery Coach for Every Client

Each client is paired with a Recovery Coach who supports them outside scheduled therapy—helping with goal-setting, accountability, real-world application, and engagement in external recovery communities. This closes the common “care gap” seen in PHPs.

Separate PHP & IOP Curricula

Unlike many programs that combine PHP and IOP clients, this program never mixes levels of care, ensuring that PHP clients receive a curriculum and group dynamic specifically designed for higher clinical intensity and early-stage recovery.

Ultra-Small Group Sizes

Group sizes are intentionally capped at 8 participants, allowing for deeper therapeutic work, stronger peer accountability, and highly individualized attention—an uncommon feature in PHPs that often run groups of 20–30 clients.

Staff With Lived Recovery Experience

Our staff members have personally been through the program or recovery themselves. This peer-informed model enhances trust, relatability, and credibility, offering additional authenticity and experiential understanding.

Clinical Treatment Modalities

At Lighthouse Recovery, we employ a comprehensive range of treatment modalities that have been proven effective in addressing substance abuse and supporting individuals on their path to recovery. Our approach is holistic, evidence-based, and tailored to meet the unique needs of each client.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy employs activities to delve into thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It harnesses the belief that personal growth stems from experience, offering a safe and supportive environment. In treatment, experiential therapy aids individuals in exploring, developing coping skills, fostering relationships, and making transformative changes.

Goal Setting Theory

Goal setting theory suggests that clear, specific, and challenging goals increase the likelihood of achievement. It also emphasizes the importance of having a plan and tracking progress. In treatment, goal-setting theory aids individuals in establishing and attaining recovery goals. Counselors assist clients in identifying goals, breaking them into manageable steps, devising a plan, and monitoring progress.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered counseling technique that addresses hesitancy to change. It fosters collaboration, focusing on the individual’s motivation and strengths instead of the counselor’s expertise. MI is often used in treatment programs to enhance motivation and promote behavior change in people with substance use disorders.

Attachment Theory

Attachment theory explores the emotional bonds between infants, children, and their caregivers, influencing self-development, trust, and intimacy. In our treatment programs, it aids individuals in comprehending how early attachments shape their present relationships and behaviors.

Family Systems

Family systems theory sees the family as a unified system, not just individuals. It encompasses interconnected parts, including members, relationships, culture, and values. In clinical treatment, family systems theory aids individuals in grasping how their family influences addiction and recovery. It also facilitates altering family dynamics to promote recovery.

Benefits of Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP Dallas)

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers a powerful middle ground between inpatient rehab and outpatient care—providing intensive clinical support while allowing individuals to maintain elements of daily life. PHP can be one of the most effective stages of early recovery.

Programs like those at Lighthouse Recovery Texas highlight how PHP can deliver both structure and flexibility without compromising quality of care.

Below are the key benefits of PHP, especially when compared to traditional outpatient or blended programs.

High-Level Structure Without Full Residential Commitment

PHP provides a full-day treatment schedule—often 25–30+ hours per week—while allowing clients to live at home or in sober living. This makes it ideal for individuals who need intensive support but cannot step away entirely from work, school, or family responsibilities.

Individualized, Clinically Intensive Care

Unlike standard outpatient programs, PHP offers frequent individual therapy, psychiatric oversight, and customized treatment planning. Clients receive a level of clinical attention that closely mirrors inpatient care, without overnight stays.

Small Group Sizes for Deeper Therapeutic Work

Programs that limit group sizes allow for more meaningful participation, stronger peer accountability, and personalized feedback. Smaller groups create safer spaces for vulnerability, which often leads to faster emotional and behavioral breakthroughs.

Real-World Skill Application While in Treatment

One of PHP’s greatest advantages is the ability to immediately apply coping skills in daily life. Clients practice boundaries, emotional regulation, and relapse-prevention strategies in real time—then process challenges the very next day in treatment.

Dedicated Support Beyond Therapy Hours

High-quality PHPs extend care beyond scheduled sessions through recovery coaching or case management. This additional layer of accountability helps clients navigate triggers, build routines, and stay engaged in recovery during evenings and weekends.

Seamless Step-Down Continuum of Care

PHP is designed as part of a broader recovery journey. After completion, clients typically transition into an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), ensuring continuity of care rather than abrupt discharge. When PHP and IOP are kept clinically distinct, each stage better supports the client’s evolving needs.

Integrated Mental Health & Dual Diagnosis Treatment

For individuals facing both substance use and mental health disorders, PHP allows for simultaneous treatment of both conditions. Integrated care reduces relapse risk and improves long-term outcomes by addressing root causes—not just symptoms.

Longer-Term Recovery Support

Programs that offer extended support after PHP—such as alumni services, continued coaching, or follow-up care—help clients sustain progress well beyond the formal treatment window. This continuity can be a major factor in long-term recovery success.

PHP Daily Schedule: What to Expect in Partial Hospitalization Rehab

Understanding what a typical day looks like in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) can ease anxiety and help you prepare for this important step in your recovery journey.

What Time Does a Typical PHP Day Start and End?

Most PHP programs run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, providing approximately 30 hours of structured programming per week.

This schedule allows you to maintain work, school, or family commitments while receiving intensive treatment. You’ll return home each evening to practice the skills you’ve learned in real-world settings.

The structured daytime format provides comprehensive care without requiring residential admission or overnight stays.

Morning Session: Group Therapy and Skill-Building Activities

Your day typically begins with group therapy sessions where you’ll connect with peers facing similar challenges. Morning groups often focus on building essential recovery skills through evidence-based approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques for identifying and changing negative thought patterns
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance
  • Process groups where you can share experiences and receive peer feedback
  • Psychoeducational sessions on the science of addiction and recovery

These intimate group settings foster meaningful connections and provide opportunities to learn from others who understand your journey.

Midday Break: Lunch and Personal Time in PHP Programs

PHP programs typically include designated time for lunch and personal reflection each day. This break allows you to decompress, connect with peers informally, and practice self-care techniques you’re learning in treatment.

Many clients use this time to call family, journal, meditate, or simply reset before afternoon programming. These moments of autonomy are crucial for building confidence in managing your recovery independently.

Afternoon Programming: Individual Counseling and Specialized Workshops

Afternoons usually include one-on-one therapy sessions where you’ll work directly with licensed clinicians on your personalized treatment plan. You’ll also participate in specialized workshops that may cover:

  • Trauma processing and PTSD treatment
  • Relapse prevention planning and trigger identification
  • Goal-setting and life skills development
  • Experiential therapies like art therapy, music therapy, or recreational therapy

This individualized attention ensures your unique needs and recovery goals remain the focus throughout your PHP experience.

Educational Sessions: Learning Coping Skills and Relapse Prevention

Throughout your PHP day, you’ll attend psychoeducational sessions that provide practical tools for lasting recovery. These classes teach you how to identify warning signs, manage cravings, and build a sustainable recovery lifestyle. Common topics include:

  • Recognizing and managing triggers in everyday situations
  • Building healthy routines and structure at home
  • Understanding how family dynamics and relationships impact recovery
  • Developing communication skills and boundary-setting abilities

The skills you gain aren’t theoretical—they’re designed for immediate application in your daily life.

Medication Management and Health Monitoring Throughout the Day

Many PHP programs include regular meetings with a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner to address medication needs. Medical oversight typically involves:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly psychiatric evaluations
  • Medication adjustments based on your progress and symptoms
  • Monitoring for withdrawal symptoms or side effects
  • Integration of medication management with therapy goals

This medical component provides safety and stability as your body and mind heal from substance use or mental health challenges.

Evening Wrap-Up: Reflection, Planning, and Preparing for Home

Each day typically concludes with reflection exercises and planning for the evening ahead, helping you transition back to your home environment. You may work with counselors or recovery coaches to set specific goals for practicing skills outside of treatment.

This daily preparation builds your confidence in managing triggers and challenges independently. By the time you leave each afternoon, you have a clear roadmap for maintaining your recovery until the next session.

How PHP Schedules Differ from Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment

Understanding the distinctions between treatment levels helps you choose the right fit for your needs:

  • Inpatient/Residential: 24/7 care with overnight stays, typically 30-90 days, most intensive supervision
  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP): 5-6 hours daily, 5 days per week (25-30 hours total), return home nightly
  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP): 3 hours daily, 3-5 days per week (9-15 hours total), greater independence
  • Standard Outpatient: 1-2 hours weekly, minimal structure, maintenance-focused care

PHP serves as the ideal middle ground, offering intensive clinical support while allowing you to maintain your daily responsibilities and home life.

Flexibility in PHP: Accommodating Work, School, and Family Obligations

The daytime schedule in most PHP programs allows you to maintain employment, attend classes, or care for family members. Unlike inpatient treatment, you won’t need to take extended leave from your responsibilities or relocate for care.

Structured programming typically runs during business hours, leaving evenings and weekends for personal obligations. This balance helps you build recovery skills while staying connected to the life you’re working to improve.

Our experience with Light House has been extraordinary. The staff are caring and communicative, the therapy team is excellent, and it is clear that for these folks, working at LH is truly a calling. Our son has grown and matured, gaining the confidence to pursue his goals. This is

beginning the journey to recovery.
Sara S.
I completed a full stay at the lighthouse sober living as well as went through their PHP, IOP, and SOP programs they offer. Lighthouse didn’t just get me back on my feet, but they laid the necessary tools to live a happy, sober, and independent life in front of me and showed me in depth how to use each and every one of them. I will forever be in debt to what this program gave me during the most formative year of my life. Lighthouse is one of very few places where every staff member truly just wants to see you succeed. I could go through the list of names, but it would be too long. Thank you lighthouse for giving me the why’s and the how’s on how to live a life beyond what I could have imagined a little over a year ago.
Navigating this past year with my child in recovery was incredibly challenging, especially with him being 12 hours away from home. From the very beginning, the team at Lighthouse Recovery made me feel supported and informed every step of the way. I could tell that they truly cared for my child, not just as a client, but as a person.

Bryce, my son’s case manager, was always timely and compassionate in his communication, answering my questions and keeping me updated. Frankie, the operations manager, took the time to help me understand addiction and what my child was going through. Brooke, the Chief Clinical Officer, also offered guidance and support.

I had to trust complete strangers with my child, and I can honestly say that Lighthouse became an extension of our family. Their dedication, professionalism, and genuine care made an overwhelming situation feel manageable, and I am deeply grateful for everything they did to support both my child and our family.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a type of intensive treatment that provides support and therapy to people who need more than outpatient treatment but less than inpatient hospitalization. PHP programs are a valuable option for people who are struggling with substance use and mental health challenges but who are able to live at home.

What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are two distinct approaches to addiction treatment, each catering to different levels of intensity and the specific needs of individuals seeking help. A PHP offers a more intensive and structured treatment environment, involving daily sessions that can span several hours, and it often includes medical and psychiatric monitoring in addition to therapy and counseling. This level of care is most suitable for individuals with severe addiction issues or co-occurring mental health disorders who require a higher level of support but do not need 24/7 inpatient care. On the other hand, an IOP is less intensive, typically requiring 9-20 hours of treatment spread over several days each week. It is well-suited for those with moderate addiction who still need comprehensive treatment but have a stronger support system in their daily lives or who have completed a higher level of care and are transitioning back into normalcy.

What is the goal of PHP?

The goal of PHP treatment is to help people who are struggling with mental health or substance use challenges to improve their overall well-being, and reduce the risk of relapse. PHP programs typically provide a variety of services, including individual therapy, group therapy, skills training, and psychiatric support.

What does the daily and weekly schedule look like?

While participating in our Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas, the individual will attend private and group therapy sessions. Our PHP structure includes 30 hours of group therapy that’s six hours a day, five days a week. Patients also attend at least one hour-long individual therapy session a week, as well as weekly psychiatrist visits. Each patient is also paired with a Recovery Coach that is available outside of the clinical setting. The Recovery Coach will help the patient set goals and provide accountability and support where needed.

How many people are in a PHP Group?

The industry standard for PHP group therapy sessions is 14-16 participants. At Lighthouse Recovery Texas we find that this practice can hinder group culture, and as a result, we limit all of our groups to 8 participants. This allows the members of each group to receive the individual attention they need.

Is Insurance Accepted?

In many cases, private insurance will help cover the costs that are associated with a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Lighthouse Recovery Texas is In-Network with most major providers. To see what your coverage would be, you can verify your benefits here.

Who qualifies for PHP?

Before enrolling patients in our Partial Hospitalization Program in Dallas, we conduct a free assessment with a trained professional so that we can take into account the individual’s history to determine what level of care they need. After the evaluation, they will determine if a PHP should be part of your unique recovery plan. Most often individuals who qualify for a PHP level of care are in the early stages of recovery and still need a significant amount of support to create and maintain healthy habits and patterns.

How long does PHP last?

A PHP is intensive and meant to fully engage the patient throughout the program. Although many hours per week are dedicated to the program, the program typically lasts just 4 weeks. However, it should be noted that the exact length of time can vary from patient to patient based on their needs and response to the program.
