We all need support in life, and if you are recovering from a substance use disorder (SUD) this is especially true. Support groups provide two vital purposes during addiction treatment:

  • They are a way to connect with people who are going through the same experience.
  • Many people have to distance themselves from friends and family early in recovery, and support groups help fill the void.

Having support groups is important throughout recovery, even years after leaving an addition treatment center or Sober Living home. We’ve listed a few ways people in North Texas can find support in and out of a Dallas addiction recovery center.

Finding Support at Dallas Addiction Centers

The top Dallas addiction centers know that you can’t get enough support in recovery. They foster support in addiction treatment programs by incorporating group therapy. During these sessions people make connections and hear the experience of people who are also going through addiction recovery. It’s a powerful way to build bonds that can provide amazing perspective, accountability and motivation.

At our Dallas addiction center, we also pair patients up with a Recovery Coach and require regular interaction with our supportive medical team. This ensures that patients get all-around support individually, medically and from peers. We also highly encourage family counseling as a way to bolster familial support.

Attending NA and AA Meetings in Dallas

Since 1935 Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has helped people who have alcohol use disorder stay the sober course using a treatment model that’s based on spirituality and peer support. While AA is strictly for people who struggle with alcohol, there’s also Narcotics Anonymous (NA), which works off the same 12 Step principles but is specifically for people who use illicit drugs.

Like group therapy at addiction treatment centers, NA and AA meetings are an opportunity to connect with peers who you have a shared experience with. Meetings are free and the 12 Step program has proven to be highly effective at helping people maintain sobriety long-term, making it one of the best resources in later recovery stages.

Staying in a Sober Living Home

If you want to take the support up a level staying at a Sober Living house is an excellent option. A Sober Living house is a residence where all the residents are in drug or alcohol recovery. There’s also a house manager that lives onsite and helps provide assistance to residents.

No two Sober Living homes in Dallas are exactly the same. However, oost Dallas Sober Living homes require that residents take part in at least one group meeting a week. It helps to build bonds among the residents so that everyone is more likely to support one another. Some addiction treatment centers offer Sober Living services for a seamless transition.

Joining Online Support Groups

There are addiction recovery centers in Dallas offer telehealth services and organize online support groups alongside in-person group therapy sessions for those who aren’t able to be at a physical location. During the pandemic, these online resources proved just how invaluable they are in maintaining and deepening connections with people that provide support.

We highly suggest that if you do choose to join an online support group it’s with an official organization that monitors the discussions so that they stay positive and productive.

Always Ask for Help When You Need It

The number one thing to remember is it’s always okay to ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness. Asking for help is a sign that you’re serious about recovering and staying sober. That’s something everyone in your support groups will respect whether you’re at an addiction treatment center or at home with family.

At Lighthouse Recovery we provide support at every level from the moment you arrive at our Dallas addiction center. You’ll receive support from an expert medical staff, trained therapists, a Recovery Coach, peers in group therapy and family during counseling sessions. It’s the all-around support system that leads to a successful recovery.
